Realization phase 2, development phase 3-6
Cartesius in Utrecht is being developed into a sustainable and health-focused urban district with nearly 3,000 homes, a mix of social housing, mid-rent, affordable and private sector units. The project is located next to the railway station and will include commercial spaces, a sports hall, a primary school, childcare facilities, Cartesius Park, a green loop and a visitor parking garage. At the heart of the district is the listed CAB building, which will be repurposed with community and commercial functions.
The development is the first in the Utrecht region to apply the Blue Zones theory within a city, making health and wellbeing central to its design. As part of the ‘Covenant Building a Healthy Neighbourhood’, partners are monitoring how interventions in the living environment affect residents’ physical and mental health, with the aim of later expanding the programme to other Dutch urban projects.
